![]() ![]() In an unusual move, the Marlins will pay major league salaries to their displaced coaches who accept minor league jobs in the organization, a team source said. Former third-base coach Cookie Rojas has been hired to fill that position with the New York Mets, while former first-base coach Rusty Kuntz is expected to become a roving outfield instructor for the Marlins. “We basically said, ‘We need to come up with a way to maximize fan support in 1997.”‘ Asked if the directive had come from the top, Geddis said, “Oh yeah.”įormer Marlins coaches who lost jobs when Leyland brought in his own staff have until the end of the month to accept other positions offered within the organization. “This [new ticket plan) was all structured prior to annoucing the Leyland hire and the [planned) offseason moves,” Geddis said. Wayne Huizenga has given General Manager Dave Dombrowski and President Don Smiley the go-ahead to make key acquisitions this winter via free agency and/or trades, and the Marlins’ payroll is expected to rise from about $32 million in 1996 to perhaps as high as $40 million in 1997.īut Huizenga has said that if the Marlins field a contending team and don’t see an accompanying jump in attendance, he would consider selling the franchise. The Marlins are desperate to boost attendance. Current season-ticket holders will be notified of ordering instructions by mail within two weeks. Single-game tickets will go on sale in early 1997.
